YOUTH HIGHLIGHTED BY

SALISBURY SCOTTISH RITE

By: Hon. Samuel M. Walker, 32°, KCCH

Each year a number of youth on the Lower Eastern Shore are highlighted by the Salisbury Scottish Rite Charitable

Foundation. These include two high school graduates each receiving a $500 scholarship for each semester they are attending

a community college, vocational training school or a four-year college or university. The recipients are chosen on the basis of

need, school and community involvement and their choice of a career which directly affects children and their development.

Applications are sent to 18 area high schools. Any graduate in other schools may also apply.

The Foundation’s Scholarship is listed in the financial handbooks for seniors and is registered

with the Educational Foundation of the Easter Shore. A Scottish Rite representative also appears

on the local television station to explain and discuss the Scholarship.

This year, 31 applications were received from 16 different schools. The Application Committee

numbers each application as they are received. The Committee reviews and evaluates the

applications by the numbers and not the student’s name or school. Of the 31 applicants, 28

were females and 3 were males. The recipients for the 2009-2010 school year were from Salisbury

and Seaford, Delaware.

Emily Metzger, a graduate of Parkside High School in Salisbury, was involved in the Future E

ducators of America, the National Honor Society, Student Government, Spanish National

Honor Society, was a math and reading tutor for elementary students and was on the lacrosse

and field hockey teams. She will be attending High Pont (NC) University to study elementary

and special education.

Haley Quillen, a graduate of Seaford High School, was involved in the National Honor Society,

Student Government, Fellowship for Christian Athletes, was on the field hockey, softball and

swimming teams and was the WBOC-TV/Mountaire Farms Scholar Athlete of the month for

February 2010. She will be attending Salisbury University to study secondary school mathematics.

Salisbury Scottish Rite also recognizes an outstanding cadet in five local JROTC programs.

A cadet is chosen by the commanding officer of each program for outstanding achievement

in Academics, Leadership and Americanism. The recipient receives a certificate and a medal

and ribbon to be worn on their uniform. The local programs participating are

Crisfield High School (Army), Pocomoke High School (Marines), Snow Hill High School (Marines),

Stephen Decatur High School (Navy) and Wicomico High School (Army). A Scottish Rite r

epresentative makes the presentation at a JROTC awards ceremony at each school.

The Salisbury Valley of the Scottish Rite is proud of its involvement in the education, development

and careers of the youth of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We will continue to encourage and

support them in any way we can.
